(Fitness) Whey or Plant-based Protein Powder?

by - Monday, May 15, 2017

Back then, I was really into fitness to the extent I actually consumed excessive amount of Protein Powder, despite I am lactose intolerant (What is Lactose Intolerance? HERE).
As I said, I learnt from experiences, either own or others'.
What I got into was way unexpected. Picture below was when the condition was really bad.

Several smaller studies have shown that consumption of whey protein can promote acne formation.
Firstly, as mentioned, whey protein may destabilize the gut microbiota, thereby possibly triggering a cascade of inflammatory events.
Secondly, some of the hormones and bio-active peptides present in whey protein may increase sebum production and/or proliferation of Propionibacterium acnes
Thirdly, a lot of protein powders contain metals and other ingredients that lack safety data, some of which may be associated with the development of acneiform lesions.
Fourthly, milk derivatives, particularly those with a high milk serum protein content, induce a marked increase in insulin-like growth factor 1 levels, which leads to growth and division of cutaneous cells, sebum production, and estrogen production, among other things.

I went through a hard time to recover my back acne by consulting dermatologist.
It took tough months to recover and I was feeling so down with my confidence level dropped.
Of course, it is recovered now but I am still restricting myself from taking the normal protein powder because I would usually get diarrhea if I consume the normal protein powder.

Recently, I decided to start consuming protein powder again.
Not just any types of Protein powder but Kay-kay All Plant Sports Protein Powder.

(No, the shaker isn't part of the package)

Hurray for people who are lactose intolerant a.k.a. me!!
Finally, I can replenish without any worries, of course moderately. (Aherm! No more overdose!)
But what is so good about All Plant Protein Powder?
Is it better than the normal protein powder? Should I switch?
No harm switching but of course, if you are someone lactose intolerant, it is better for you to opt for Plant-based.

So, what are the benefits consuming Kay-kay All Plant Sports Protein Powder

Benefit #1 : Dairy free, Gluten free, Fat free, cholesterol free and trans fat free
It is suitable for those who are on low carb diet.
It is generally healthier with zero known side effects.
Plant-based protein powder can be the top pick for those who do suffer from a whey allergy. It can also be a great choice for those who have gluten allergies!
Other protein powders may have gluten in them to help you feel fuller, but plant-based protein powder, especially Kay-kay All Plant Protein Powder, is also gluten free and hypoallergenic!

Benefit #2 : Contains 23 nutrient-rich ingredients and added L-carnitine

Plant protein is perfectly packaged along with an abundance of phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and fiber—all critical components for optimal health and disease prevention.

Benefits of L-carnitine are as below: -
1) Maintain endurance & assist in muscle recovery
2) Help in sparing glycogen by utilizing more fats - weight-loss

Benefit #3 : Vegan friendly
Contains natural phytonutrients from vegetable blend of Carrot, Red beet, Mushroom, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Green Cabbage, Celeriac, Leek, Onion, Cucumber, Asparagus, Red bell pepper and Garlic.
One serving of Kay-kay All Plant Sports Protein Powder provides you with 10g of Soy Protein to support your daily workout on top of your daily diet.

Benefit #4 : Helps in calorie control

Fruits and veggies have a beautiful way of providing very few calories. You can eat a plate full of those yummy morsels and it will be as much calories as a small serving of meat.
For example, one cup of chopped chicken will cost you 231 calories. Wanna compare the numbers to some fruits and vegetables?
  • 9 carrots = 225 calories
  • 2 cups of peas = 236 calories
  • 33 cups of spinach = 231 calories
  • 2 ½ apples = 232.5 calories
  • 57 strawberries = 228 calories

Benefit #5 : Alkalizing Anomalies
Foods such as meat and carbs are more acidic in nature and cause our pH levels to get out of whack. To cope with the change, our bodies take minerals from our bones and other places, and then distribute those minerals accordingly.
Plant-based diets help to combat the acidity in our diets. Plants that have high amounts of chlorophyll (the greener, the better) provide the alkalinity that our bodies need.

Blended plant-based protein provides a full spectrum of amino acids through complementary sources and is alkaline forming in the body.  In other words, plant-based protein is healthy and is a much smarter alternative to traditional whey protein powders.

Benefit #6 : Great taste

Kay-kay comes with the all natural Vanilla flavour.
You may mix and match with other ingredients to create your personalised smoothie!
I shall share one of my favourite recipes on the next blog post. *wink*

Verdict?
Priced at RM89.90 for the size of 400g, I personally think it is worth the price in view of all the healthy ingredients included in this compact size of 400g.

I like the taste of Natural Vanilla flavour as it doesn't taste artificial at all.
I tried some other brands' Vanilla flavour, it tasted artificial like clay. =X

Will I buy again? Oh yes, definitely!
I had been trying to find good quality of plant-based protein powder and here it is.
